A Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund

About A Noble Groom:

Michigan, 1880
Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.
So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.
Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher---or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.
With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming---unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

Margie's Comments: I was originally drawn to Jody Hedlund's newest release, A Noble Groom, because of my girlhood love of princesses and happily-ever-after fairy tales. What girl isn't? So reading the summary/back cover copy piqued my interest when I read that Annalisa had lost her faith in those stories and their promise of true love. Plus the author has proven herself a true storyteller and I've enjoyed her previous books. So I looked forward to another wonderful read . . . and I wasn't disappointed. She has once again created such believable characters that I keep thinking I want to meet them in real life. I wanted to continue reading about Annalisa and Carl and Gretchen, Sophie, Uri, and the rest of the characters in the book. Well, not Mr. Ward and his henchmen, but the rest. A British Isles girl though and through, I haven't read much about Germany's history other than in World History classes. So the story line and the characters enriched my appreciation for history, no matter where a story takes place. The author also created believable back stories for her characters and enriched them with good reasons to guard their secrets carefully. If you enjoy a good historical romance, you will enjoy Jody Hedlund's A Noble Groom.

ABOUT THE BOOK

High-Stakes Drama Meets High-Tension Romance

In 1883 Michigan, Lily Young is on a mission to save her lost sister, or die trying. Heedless of the danger, her searches of logging camps lead her to Harrison and into the sights of Connell McCormick, a man doing his best to add to the hard-earned fortunes of his lumber baron father.

Posing during the day as a photographer's assistant, Lily can't understand why any God-fearing citizen would allow evil to persist and why men like Connell McCormick turn a blind eye to the crime rampant in the town. But Connell is boss-man of three of his father's lumber camps in the area, and like most of the other men, he's interested in clearing the pine and earning a profit. He figures as long as he's living an upright life, that's what matters.

Lily challenges everything he thought he knew, and together they work not only to save her sister but to put an end to the corruption that's dominated Harrison for so long.

But then Priscilla and Eli both receive news from the mission board: No longer will they send unmarried men and women into the field.

Left scrambling for options, the two realize the other might be the answer to their needs. Priscilla and Eli agree to a partnership, a marriage in name only that will allow them to follow God's leading into the mission field. But as they journey west, this decision will be tested by the hardships of the trip and by the unexpected turnings of their hearts.

Yet Elizabeth's new role as nanny takes a dangerous turn when John's boldness from the pulpit makes him a target of political and religious leaders. As the preacher's enemies become desperate to silence him, they draw Elizabeth into a deadly web of deception.
