Margie's Comments: I have read (and facilitated Bible studies of) all of Joanna Weaver's books, starting with Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Isn't that a great title? So when I heard that Joanna's newest release was a devotional book, I wanted to read and review it.
I've already added At the Feet of Jesus: Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart to my devotion time each morning. With the readings coming directly from her books about Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, I'm challenged daily with the Scripture readings, principles, and reflection questions that keep drawing me back to developing that Mary heart Jesus told Martha she needed. Reminders I need as a "recovering" Martha. Many of the sidebars from the books that challenge the reader to dig deeper into their relationship with Jesus are included in this book.
As an added bonus, I went to her website where Joanna has a year-long read through the Bible plan that you can tailor to your schedule. It can start at any time, and it includes reflection days during the month and at the end of each month to catch up and/or review what you have read previously. I downloaded one for me, and I'm enjoying another journey through the Bible.
Even if you haven't read her other books, this book will be an excellent tool to deepen your devotional time with the Lord.
Joanna writes about getting God’s love from our heads to our hearts. We all know Jesus loved Mary – look how she worshiped. And we can understand why He loved Martha – after all, look how she served. But what about those of us who don’t know where we fit in the heart of God? Lazarus Awakening explores the tale of the third follower – Mary and Martha’s brother, Lazarus. We never hear him speak, we never see him serve. The only thing of any significance that Lazarus did was to die. And yet, the Bible is clear. Jesus loved Lazarus. And He loves you and me as well. Lazarus Awakening looks at different aspects of the story we find in John 11. We learn what it means to be a friend of God and begin recognizing the tombs we spend far too much time in.
